The Society of African Missions (SMA) recently concluded a yearlong celebration marking the 140th anniversary of the introduction of Catholicism into Ashanti. The momentous occasion, which took place on June 25th, 2023, honored the historic visit of Fr. Auguste Moreau to Mahyia Palace in 1882, where he sought permission to establish the Catholic Church in Ashanti.

In a momentous gathering, the province of Lyon and the Generalate collaborated to host a round table discussion commemorating four decades of the African Foundation project in Lyon. The event witnessed the presence of esteemed personalities, including five former SMA superior Generals, the current Superior General, archbishops, bishops, priests, and Missionary Catechist Sisters of the Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Apostles sisters as well as the Lay missionary fraternity (FLM).

Finally, the plane of the Plenary Council 2023 on this eleventh day of work has landed, and what a smooth landing it was. During the opening prayer of today’s session, the Superior General, Fr. Antonio Porcellato said, “Missionaries are disciples that make other disciples”.

The plane of the Plenary Council has entered the landing mode on the tenth day of progressive work. Since the take off was smooth, it is hoped that the landing will equally be a smooth ride. The morning session today was dedicated to some of the issues that members had brought up for discussion. One such matter was the question of appointments. Certain members shared the difficulty they are experiencing with regard to stability of conferes in the mission.

The highlight of this day was the visit of the Archbishop of Lyon to the members of the Plenary Council. In his opening remarks, Bishop Olivier de Germay said God does not just welcome us into his house, but he invites himself into our hearts. In his homily, in the mass that was also concelebrated by the former bishop of Niamey, Michel Cartateguy and the current bishop of Berbérati in Central African Republic, Dennis Kofi Agbenyadzi, the Primate of Gauls speaking about generosity and sharing with the poor, said, “God gives us the grace to be fruitful and the grace to be able to give.”

It is the eighth day of the Plenary Council and Fr. Emmanuel Zinsou, the Nigerian Provincial Superior celebrates his 14th priestly anniversary. While most of the working documents were voted for yesterday, the document on money matters regarding health went through scrutiny. The medical welfare of all members of the new Units and all members working in Africa will be guaranteed by pooling the sums already available into three Funds that operate at three different levels:
